This could be the first experiment in the language after Kannada movie 'Lucia' was made through crowd funding
Mangaluru: Sandalwood film maker Pawan Kumar's Lucia drew attention for its use of crowd funding. Now, ad maker Sithesh C Govind has decided to use crowd funding for his upcoming Tulu film 'Meals Ready'. A man who has directed several documentaries and taken up advertising and branding projects, Sithesh, speaking to Bangalore Mirror, said the movie is about food and revenge. "The script is ready and I have decided to opt for crowdfunding to make this movie. The concept is certainly new to Tulu film industry which is doing really well. Irrespective of our success, if this campaign works, it could help the next generation of film-makers to create content which may not have commercial viability but is meaningful. This funding model can take away commercial pressure from creative people. There have been several experiments after Lucia. For instance, 'Oralpokkam' (Six Feet High), became the first movie in Malayalam made by online crowd funding. It was released last year. Similarly, Bengali directors have attempted crowd funding," he said. Sithesh said that the budget for the film is about Rs 40-60 lakh. The crowd funding is happening through his website www.coastalwoodfilms.com. It was launched about six months ago and will continue for another three months. The project is expected to be on floors by January next year.
He said, "I have received assurances from people across the world, especially from Tulu-speaking people settled in UK, US and Germany. Kannadigas too have extended support. I have not yet started accepting cash from people."
Sithesh worked on several creatives for print - brochures and storyboards - during his career in advertising. His special interest has been branding strategy and communication. He has a degree in art from the Academy of Visual Art, Cochin and in visual communication, digital video film production with special effects from All Saints College, Kerala as well as a degree in behavioural science psychology. He worked for a brief period as a freelance designer and ideation specialist and creative designer and visualiser with several ad agencies. He has made a couple of documentaries in Konkani - especially related to the famous 'Kodial Teru' and will be debuting as a feature film maker with 'Meals Ready'.

A sincere effort in a need of sincere support: Sithesh C Govind
Sithesh C Govind is all set to venture in Coastalwood with a new type of film. He is a well known creative director in advertising field in Mangaluru. He has indulged with his creativity in the field of national and international. He has written and directed Info-tainers and Docu-films and TVC’s for many prestigious clients all over. And now he has decided to quit his lucrative career for film-making. Well, he is one of the thousands who have done so. Now he is ready with a film titled ‘Meals Ready’. And the unique part of the film is that he wants crowd funding for the film. In an exclusive chat with sandalwoodplus.com, Sithesh C Govind reveals his plans:
Why did you quit your profession for film-making?
I have a passion towards film-making. Even though I have not worked as an associate under any director, I know the craft of direction due to my advertising field connection. I quit my job to peruse my passion in film making, which was indeed my dream. I want to turn a full-time film-maker after this project.
Film Industry does not give you job stability. Is it not risky for you to leave your profession and venture into film-making at this point of time?
I know it’s risky. But I am sure of my film. I have written the script keeping the new generation audience in my mind. I am sure of having a good career in Film Industry.
What is ‘Meals Ready’ about?
‘Meals Ready’ is about how food plays an important role in our life. The film cannot be put into a single genre. It has all elements in it. However I would like to clarify it is a content based film, which will for sure entertain the audience
Why are you venturing into crowd funding?
My script is different. And by different, I mean it’s different. It has a strong content in it. It’s an experimental film where ‘food’ plays an important character. I wanted the film to be produced by an individual producer. I tried contacting many producers. But most of them are not ready to take the risk of producing a new idea film. They are scared that it will not liked by masses. Some have even suggested me to add some commercial elements. However I do not want to change my film’s script just for the sake of making it mass friendly. I do not want to do the same old commercial film with routine comedy and drama sequences. Some producers even asked to me remake other languages film in Tulu. I am against remakes and will not compromise with my script. I have no issues if a single producer approaches me.
Why are you choosing Tulu Film Industry for your film? Is it not better to direct this type of film in Kannada, where there is a bigger market.
I agree. These type of experimental films have worked in Kannada. ‘Lucia’ being the example for that. However I have been in Mangaluru from so many years. I love the culture here. And my film is based on food culture of Tulunadu. So it is appropriate to make a film in Tulu. However if I do not get the required funds, I may plan to make it in Kannada.
So you are ready to make the film in Kannada, if not Tulu?
Yes. For me language is not a barrier. I believe that movies do not need a particular language to succeed. There are many instances wherein directors who do not know particular language that fluently, but still made their mark in the industry. For instance, take Mani Ratnam, the legendary director had his directorial debut in Kannada. He did not know the language., Even Priyadarshan did not know Hindi. But he has directed so many successful films in Bollywood. So I will change the script accordingly to the Kannada nativity.
If you get an individual producer to back your film, will you direct it?
Yes I will. But my creative aspects should not be disturbed. If a producer with keen interest approaches, it’s better for me as I can start my work at the earliest.
If you get the required funds from crowd funding, what are the benefits which an individual gets if he funds your project?
I will be clear with this. There has been a bit confusion regarding it. This is not a share market, wherein you invest money and expect to recover it. By crowd funding, I will collecting funds through pre-order. Regarding pre-order, you can go through my website coastalwoodfilms.com. So an individual will be pre-ordering my film. And he will be benefitted if he shares the link of my films with his friends. He will be getting incentives for each shares.
What is the estimated budget for your film?
I am estimating the film’s budget to be around 50 to 60 lacs. The film will be shot in 20-30 days. I will need around 60 to 90 days for post production. So I require four to five months in total. If I get the required funds, I will start shooting for the film by early 2016.
Whom are you planning to cast in your film?
I will be casting newcomers for the film. Talented youngsters will be given a chance to work in the film.
So there will be no established stars of Tulu films in the film?
My script does not demand an established star. We have many talented actors in our industry. I want to give chance to newcomers in my film.
Who are your inspirations in film industry?
My inspiration is Anurag Kashyap. I love the way he does films. He aspires many upcoming directors. I have also got inspired by Pawan Kumar. The way he presented ‘Lucia’ was one of the turning point. His crowd funding concept gave me an idea to get funds for this film.
What do you have to say to the audiences?
I am doing a sincere film with great effort and I desire to make a good movie. I need the support of audiences all over. All I need is encouragement and heartfelt wishes. Without them, I cannot do this film. I assure them of giving a good project.
